AS I SEE IT
Bob Magee
Pro Wrestling: Between the Sheets

In the United States, Thanksgiving is one week from Thursday
(Canadians are lucky....they already had theirs...and with
better weather).
During this season, AS I SEE IT has discussed weekly how the
independent wrestling community reaches out to those in
need, as independent promotions and wrestlers hold a wide
variety of charity events during the Holidays....
In those events, they've been asking fans to do one small
thing. Just "one small thing"....that meant the world to
someone you will never meet: one can of soup that meant
someone was fed for a meal....one box of rice that meant a
family was fed for a week or more.... one warm coat that
meant an older person won't shiver uncontrollably when they
walk to the market or a doctor's appointment... one toy that
meant that a child is allowed a moment of innocence and joy,
often the same child who has gone through fear and
deprivation for far too long. One "small thing" that is
anything but small.
So each week, I've posted those events, and how they helped
their communities. Some promotions worry that their event
may not collect a lot of canned food, toys, or raise a lot
of money. Some independent promotions are bigger than others
and have fan bases larger than others.
But there's a proverb out of the Talmud: if you save one
life... it as is if you saved the world. Using the logic of
that teaching...if you feed one family, make one kid happy,
give one person a warm coat....you've done so for everyone.
In an interesting side note: the same proverb is cited in
the Koran. Not to mention that Jesus also said if you did
for one of the least of mine, you did it for me....proving
that in all the great Western traditions, that EVERY effort
to do good as is important as the other.
So....Independent promotions throughout the United States
and Canada held events and gave back to their community;
collecting canned and non-perishable food and warm clothing,
doing fundraisers for homeless or domestic violence
shelters, animal welfare groups, and those with medical
needs...and lots of Toys for Tots drives. They did it
through (obviously) wrestling shows, plus Comic-Cons,
bowling parties, online trivia contests, chicken BBQ's, and
a dozen other means.
Wrestling indies are in the 2024 season of giving... with
147 charity shows/events/efforts announced (or having
taken place) so far to help their communities for the
Holidays, collecting donations from fans like you. More will
do so over the remaining weeks of the Holiday season.
Independent wrestling promotions have raised so far in 2024
341,025.70 in cash donations, 13,832 pounds
(that's well over 7 TONS) of canned and non-perishable
food,
620 toys; 50 winter jackets, 250 backpacks and "tons of
school supplies", 24 blankets, three pairs of gloves, 4 knit
hats, over 200assorted personal care items; as well
as animal blankets, cat litter, indoor dry/wet food, cat/dog
toys, and unscented baby wipes for animal rescue groups.
Mind you, this is the information I've been able to get from
promotions, charities, and so on. Inexplicably, there are
promotions that don't provide ways to be contacted, don't
have functional social media, or who don't know how much has
been donated or contributed (or even in one case won't
disclose). Every year there are a handful of shows that
have to be removed from this list (we've had 4 already this
year that aren't now counted) because of the inability or
unwillingness to provide information. News flash: getting
publicity for doing good work isn't bragging or doing
something inappropriate. Yes, helping others for the sake of
helping others is its own reward. But reporting what you do
is a vital part of what you do...it's called PROMOTING. It's
also inspiring others by your example.
Here's the list so far.
