AS I SEE IT October 21: Remembering Joe Koff, and indies helping communities for the Holidays bigtime

Joe Koff, the former Ring of Honor COO during the Sinclair
Broadcast Group era, passed away at age 73 from cancer. His
death was first announced online by MLW last Tuesday. Koff
served as the Chief Operating Officer for ROH from September
2011 to May 2022 while he was the Senior Vice President of
Training and Development at Sinclair Broadcast Group.

Koff spent most of his life working in the television
industry, going as far back as syndicating the original
Championship Wrestling from Florida Battle of the Belts
shows. He was regarded by those who eulogized him last week
as a kind, decent man who was a lifelong fan of professional
wrestling and those who worked in it.

Dave Meltzer noted Tuesday that "he helped the Young Bucks
and Cody Rhodes do All In when he could have stood in their
way... and that show was monumental in hindsight in pro
wrestling history".

Sean Ross Sapp said Koff was "so helpful and accessible, but
above all -- kind. I've heard from numerous wrestlers about
how even over the last year reached out to congratulate
former ROH talent on signing with WWE or AEW. He really
cared about wrestling, and the people that he worked with."

Jeff Jones, who worked for ROH, said "Joe Koff was a very
good and fair man. He saved ROH twice, first orchestrating
the purchase for Sinclair, and then the 2nd time making sure
it didn’t just become content for a Network and sold ROH to
Tony Khan."

I met Koff during the mid-2010s, because he was a big
supporter of Ring of Honor working with Toys for Tots,
including at the ECW Arena. ROH participated in Toys for
Tots collections for several years during their Final Battle
year end shows; including the Briscoes doing unforgettable
commercials in 2014, 2015, and 2018 on ROH TV urging fans to
donate toys. I still have the picture from 2015 of the
Briscoes, standing alongside the Marine Honor Guard at the
Toys for Tots boxes, at the entrance to the ECW Arena,
greeting and thanking the many fans who donated.

It can safely be said that thousands of children got a
Christmas over several years because of Joe Koff. May his
memory be a blessing to all who knew him, loved him, and
worked with him.

As I have since 2017 in this AS I SEE IT blog, I report
during this season on how the independent wrestling
community reaches out to those in need.

Independent promotions throughout the United States and
Canada held events and gave back to their community;
collecting canned and non-perishable food and warm clothing,
doing fundraisers for homeless or domestic violence
shelters, animal welfare groups, and those with medical
needs.... and holding lots of Toys for Tots drives. They did
it through (obviously) wrestling shows, plus Comic-Cons,
bowling parties, online trivia contests, chicken BBQ's, and
a dozen other means.

Wrestling indies are in the 2024 season of giving... with
117 charity shows/events announced (or having taken place)
so far to help their communities for the Holidays,
collecting donations from fans like you.

Many more will do so over the next two plus months.
Independent wrestling promotions have at this early stage in
2024 raised $208,699.70 cash donations, 11,910
pounds (that's over 5 1/2 TONS)

perishable food, and 250 backpacks and "tons of school
supplies", two large boxes of warm clothing, over 175
