Canelo Alvarez vs. Jake Paul is real.

In the wake of a rumored bout with fellow pound-for-pound boxing star Terence Crawford falling through, it appears that Alvarez is actually going to fight YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul according to a report from ESPN. The bout is reportedly being finalized to take place May 3 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with Netflix set to stream the bout live.

The weight limit is expected to be set at 200 pounds, well above Alvarez’s most recent weigh-in where he tipped the scale at 166.75 pounds.

Though Alvarez and Paul have entertained talk of a potential fight in the past, neither has directly addressed the recent rumors. Paul has issued a few cryptic tweets, including one suggesting he will be the “A-Side” of his next fight without naming who his opponent.

Should the matchup come to fruition, this would be the second time a major Paul bout has been broadcast by Netflix. This past November, Paul took on boxing legend Mike Tyson at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, an event that was announced to have reached 60 million households and produced a gate of over $18 million.

Alvarez (62-2-2), a four-division boxing champion, currently holds a trio of super middleweight titles (WBA, WBC, and WBO). He has won five straight title fights, most recently beating Edgar Berlanga by unanimous decision this past September. The Mexican star once again competes on Cinco de Mayo weekend, a celebration he has commemorated with several fights over the years.

Paul improved to 11-1 with the decision win over Tyson, adding “Iron Mike” to a list of victories that includes former UFC champions Anderson Silva and Tyron Woodley, as well as MMA stars Nate Diaz, Mike Perry, and Ben Askren. His lone loss occurred in February 2023, when he dropped a split decision to rival Tommy Fury.
