Ciryl Gane vs. Alexander Volkov 2 UFC 310 preview
Gane (12-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) enters his first and only fight of 2024 in the final pay-per-view of the year. “Bon Gamin” was last in action in September 2023, where he stopped Serghei Spivac with punches in the second round. It was a successful rebound from his frustrating loss to Jon Jones at UFC 285. … Volkov (30-10 MMA, 6-3 UFC) has been on a tear over the past couple of years. After a first-round loss to current interim champion Tom Aspinall, “Drago” has scored four consecutive victories, including stoppages of Jairzinho Rozenstruik, Alexandr Romanov and Tai Tuivasa. His most recent win was a decision over Sergei Pavlovich in June.
Ciryl Gane vs. Alexander Volkov 2 UFC 310 expert pick, prediction
Since you can’t have a UFC card without a rematch these days, Gane will once again square off with Volkov for the viewer’s delight.
Their first fight, which went down back in 2021, saw Gane control jabbing lanes and clinching stanzas en route to out-pointing Volkov in the UFC Apex.
I don’t suspect that cage size or round differential will give either party a huge edge, so this likely comes down to who can take (and keep) the striking initiative. Although the southpaw stance Gane mainly operated from seemed to befuddle Volkov, the Russian fighter quietly carries a perfect record of 4-0 opposite UFC-level lefties, showing much sharper jabbing sensibilities in those fights.
Volkov was still suffering some serious flux in his training situation at that time due to COVID restrictions, so perhaps we didn’t see the best version of Volkov in that fight.
It’s hard to be confident either way, but I’ll semi-reluctantly take Volkov to edge out a competitive contest via his superior volume and leg kicks.
