Nicky Rod and Kade Ruotolo were the stars of the inaugural edition of the Craig Jones Invitational, taking home $1 million each after winning the over 80kg and under 80kg tournaments, respectively, at Saturday’s event at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.

Rod was one of the favorites to win the heavier division and simply gave his opponents no chance. The jiu-jitsu ace, who tapped Owen Livesey and Max Gimenis with rear-naked choke on Friday, made short work of Adam Bradley in the semifinal match.

Fellipe Andrew made his way to the final with tough decisions over Daniel Kerkvliet and Joao Gabriel Rocha Friday, and proceeded to tap Inacio Santos with a heel hook late in second round to advance.

Rod gave him no chance in the final, though, taking his back and forcing him to tap — again with a rear-naked choke — just 92 seconds into the match.

The inaugural CJI champion took the mic after the match to call out Gordon Ryan, who competed at the ADCC on the same weekend in Las Vegas.

“The only thing better than one million dollars is two million dollars,” Rod said. “So let’s do this: I want a bet match. Mr. Gordon Ryan. Because I know in my bones that I’m the actual best grappler on the planet, so let’s do this bubba. My $1 million versus your $1 million, winner-take-all bet match. Come get some.”

The Ruotolo brothers, Kade and Tye, were competing in the under 80kg division, and the $1 million prize went to Kade after three incredible wins and one hard-fought final.

Ruotolo tapped decorated wrestler Jason Nolf with a kneebar in his first match and then won a decision against Tommy Langaker on Friday, topping Andrew Tackett in the semifinal match. Meanwhile, Levi Jones-Leary forced Roberto Jimenez to give up with an inside heel hook in his first match and then upset Tye Ruotolo via decision in the quarterfinals, earning a spot in the final with a decision over Lucas Barbosa.

Kade had the chance to avenge his brother in the $1 million final, but had to work hard for it. A triangle choke attempt by Ruotolo in the first round was the best move of the match, and the duo engaged in a tense contest in the final three rounds. Ruotolo tried to change styles in the fifth by pulling guard, but went back to his previous gameplan a minute later, again working from top position to earn a decision win.
