Conor McGregor finds himself with yet another feud on his hands, this time with one of his countrymen.

Ireland’s Paul Hughes shined in his fight with lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov this past Saturday at UFC Dubai, where he narrowly lost a majority decision that had several fighters—including McGregor—touting Hughes as the true victor. That good will appears to have dissipated quickly following post-fight comments from the bout captured by Anatomy of a Fighter.

After the fight, Hughes is seen speaking to longtime McGregor rival Khabib Nurmagomedov, telling him, “I’m not like this other guy. I’m my own man.” McGregor caught wind of what seemed to be a reference to him and launched into a series of social media insults aimed at Hughes.

“Too right, you’re not,” McGregor wrote in response to Hughes’ comments. He later went on to make gross attacks referring to Hughes being from Northern Ireland, telling him to “get that flag off you, you little know-what-you-are c*nt from up there.”

McGregor later deleted those comments along with several others.

On Wednesday, Hughes responded to McGregor, praising him, while also questioning where McGregor is at from a mental standpoint.

“[McGregor], always said you were the GOAT, paid homage at every opportunity,” Hughes wrote. “But coming at my Irish identity just shows where your head is at.”

Likely not helping the situation is McGregor’s contentious relationship with the Nurmagomedov family. Mcgregor famously challenged Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC lightweight title at UFC 229 in October 2018, the culmination of a feud that saw Nurmagomedov submit McGregor in the fourth round. Nurmagomedov then sparked a brawl afterwards by attacking McGregor’s cornerman Dillon Danis, resulting in several fighters joining the altercation and later being suspended and fined.

Nurmagomedov retired in 2020, but the bad blood between he and McGregor has frequently come up in interviews and on social media. On the other side, Hughes has already earned the respect of the Nurmagomedov family, with Khabib inviting him to come to Dagestan (Hughes welcomed the idea, but wants a rematch with Usman Nurmagomedov first).

McGregor, a former two-division UFC champion, has not fought since breaking his leg in a loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021. He was recently found liable for sexual assault in a civil case tied to a 2018 incident in Dublin, and is also facing another civil suit stemming from an alleged sexual assault at a Miami Heat game in 2023.
