Marvin Vettori isn’t making any excuses for his loss to Roman Dolidze in the UFC Vegas 104 main event.
Following a 21-month layoff, the one-time UFC title challenger returned to action and battled it out with Dolidze over five rounds in a rematch after Vettori won their first encounter back in 2023. This time around it was Dolidze who got the better of the striking exchanges before ultimately earning a unanimous decision with all three judges scoring the fight 49-46 in his favor.
Later, Vettori took to Instagram Stories to express his thoughts on the fight.
“Nothing too bad, just some cuts and bruises,” Vettori said. “F*ck man, life sometimes shows you that even if you give your heart out and everything you got, you still fall short. That was a close fight. I almost had him in the third [round] but I guess it wasn’t enough.”
While there were no knockdowns during the fight, Vettori definitely landed the biggest shot when he cracked Dolidze with a straight punch in the third round that wobbled the Georgian middleweight. Vettori surged forward to take advantage of the situation, but Dolidze recovered by going for a takedown and scrambling enough to avoid further damage. From there, Dolidze upped his output and landed more strikes for the remainder of the fight, which helped him secure the victory.
It certainly wasn’t the outcome Vettori wanted, especially after relocating to Florida to train exclusively with the coaches and fighters at American Top Team. He praised the team in his post-fight statement, but Vettori is struggling to comprehend this latest setback, which dropped him to 1-3 in his past four fights.
“F*ck. I don’t even know what to say,” Vettori said. “Thank you to [American Top Team]. The best in the world … thank you UFC. What the f*ck can I say? I don’t know. That’s it.”
At 31, Vettori still has a lot of tread left on the tires, but now has to figure out how to bounce back from the toughest run of his career. If he has his choice, Vettori seems at least interested in running it back with Dolidze one more time.
