Makhachev vs. Moicano took place Jan. 18 at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, Calif. Umar Nurmagomedov (18-1) and Merab Dvalishvili (19-4) squared off in the the co-main event clash. The fight aired live on ESPN+ pay-per-view.

Round 1

They are staying well away from each other, not a single strike thrown through the first 40 seconds. There’s a high kick from Nurmagomedov that falls well short. Leg kick by Dvalishvili starts the scoring.

Big left hand from Nurmagomedov off a Dvalishvili miss. The champ felt that one. There’s a left from Dvalishvili. Right hand from Dvalishvili catches Nurmagomedov as it looks like he was anticipating a takedown. There’s a rapid striking exchange, neither fighter connecting with anything substantial.

Dvalishvili lunges into a takedown, it’s stuffed, but he scores with a punch as Nurmagomedov separates. Good body kick by Nurmagomedov. Another body kick followed by a 1-2, what combination. Single leg attempt by Dvalishvili, but Dvalishvili shows amazing balance and slips right out.

Dvalishvili easily stuffs a takedown and shrugs Nurmagomedov off. The left hand of Nurmagomedov is getting through. Right hand from Nurmagomedov hurts Dvalishvili. Close round.

Round 2

Dvalishvili steps in and lands a right hand. There’s another, but Nurmagomedov backs him up with a left. Those kicks from Nurmagomedov are stinging Dvalishvili’s body. Left hand by Dvalishvili. Nurmagomedov blocks a takedown and they separate.

Single leg by Dvalishvili, gorgeous sprawl by Nurmagomedov and he reverses and takes the back. Unbelievable. Dvalishvili stays calm and works his way back to the feet with little damage done on the ground.

Another leaning right by Dvalishvili scores. There’s a 1-2 from Nurmagomedov that backs Dvalishvili up. Inside leg kick by Nurmagomedov. Dvalishvili doing his best to just walk in and muck this fight up. Nurmagomedov blocks a deep takedown attempt. These two are ridiculously high-level, this rules.

Round 3

Nurmagomedov flicking out a few fancy kicks. Single leg by Dvalishvili causes a scramble, he briefly gets Nurmagomedov down, but Nurmagomedov back to the feet. Dvalishvili sneaks in a punch as they return to range. Both men land during an exchange. Nurmagomedov with a body kick but he eats a right hand for his troubles. Dvalishvili keeping a high pace.

Oof, looks like there might have been a clash of heads there, but they go on after a quick check from referee Jason Herzog. Dvalishvili throwing with plenty of volume. He stuffs a Nurmagomedov takedown. Single leg by Dvalishvili, he trips Nurmagomedov down and then points at him.

Big tackle by Dvalishvili and Nurmagomedov immediately kicks him off before going for a takedown of his own. Dvalishvili happy to let Nurmagomedov try to press him against the fence. He slips out and they’re back at center with a minute to work.

Counter right by Nurmagomedov, followed by a good inside leg kick. Single leg by Nurmagomedov, back take, and Dvalishvili refuses to go down. Nurmagomedov doesn’t give up and he drags Dvalishvili down to make a point, even if it leads to little offense. Dvalishvili looks confident heading into the championship rounds.

Round 4

Dvalishvili with the overhand right into a takedown again, but Nurmagomedov blocks it. Counter right by Nurmagomedov lands clean. Dvalishvili willing to take one to give one and he moves in to take Nurmagomedov down, if only for a second. The champion is fighting his fight.

Takedown again for Dvalishvili. He can’t do much damage, but he clearly has Nurmagomedov on the back foot. Right hand from Dvalishvili. He lands a good left. Nurmagomedov sticking with body and leg kicks, but they’re not slowing Dvalishvili down. Jab by Dvalishvili scores, then he lands a right. This pace is wearing on the challenger.

Right hand smacks Dvalishvili. Nurmagomedov wants a takedown, but it’s not there. He’s still scoring as he moves back, this is a closer round than it might look given Dvalishvili’s aggressiveness. Dvalishvili hits another good right and is just pressuring Nurmagomedov against the fence. Huge takedown!

They call these the championship rounds for a reason and Dvalishvili is showing why.

Round 5

Relatively slow start to the final round, with Dvalishvili going for a pair of takedowns that are stuffed. There’s another. Nurmagomedov isn’t getting taken down, but he’s not throwing anything either. Just as a write that, he lands a straight left.

Another left scores for Nurmagomedov. Dvalishvili with another shot, he mixes in a trip and he wants to drag Nurmagomedov down, but the challenger is staying upright. These two are reaching down deep with about half a round to go.

Body kick by Nurmagomedov. Dvalishvili easily avoids a takedown attempt. Jab from Nurmagomedov, then a left hand. Dvalishvili slips in a right hand. Hard body kick by Nurmagomedov. Both fighters know they need this round.

Nurmagomedov blocks another takedown. Pawing jabs by Dvalishvili, Nurmagomedov answers with jabs of his own. Left hand backs Dvalishvili up. Huge 1-2 from the champion, did that decide it? Late takedown by Dvalishvili and that could seal the deal, even with Nurmagomedov refusing to stay on his back.
