Nominees
Nominee: Shara Magomedov vs. Michal Oleksiejczuk at UFC on ABC 7
Shara Magomedov threw the kitchen sink at Michal Oleksiejczuk, and he withstood it to go the distance in the middleweight bout.
Magomedov (14-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) remained unbeaten when he defeated Oleksiejczuk (19-9 MMA, 7-7 UFC) by unanimous decision in a matchup that featured a little bit of everything.
Nominee: Dricus Du Plessis def. Israel Adesanya at UFC 305
Dricus Du Plessis has long said he is superior to Israel Adesanya, and he proved it in his first middleweight title defense.
Du Plessis (22-2 MMA, 8-0 UFC) rejected Adesanya’s (24-4 MMA, 13-4 UFC) attempt to become a three-time champion when he ended the grudge match with a fourth-round submission victory. The back-and-forth battle ended in Du Plessis’ favor when he got the fight to the mat and locked in a rear-naked choke to seal the deal.
Nominee: Caio Borralho def. Jared Cannonier at UFC on ESPN 62
For all of 25 minutes, Caio Borralho and Jared Cannonier battled in a nonstop slugfest in their middleweight main event. And in the the end, it was The Fight Nerds’ Borralho who dug just a little bit deeper
Borralho (17-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC) showed his striking is up to snuff against Cannonier (17-8 MMA, 10-8 UFC) when he earned a unanimous decision win by scores of 49-45, 49-45 and 48-46, elevating his place in the divisional rankings.
Nominee: Bogdan Grad def. Michael Aswell at Dana White's Contender Series 69
Daniel Cormier dubbed it perhaps the greatest fight in the history of Dana White’s Contender Series, and it’s hard to argue against that assessment after Bogdan Grad and Michael Aswell went to war for a UFC contract.
The matchup of featherweight prospects had a little bit of everything. Both men were hurt, bloodied and exhausted by the end of it, and two of three judges felt Grad (14-2) did a little bit more than Aswell (9-2) and he left with the split decision and a UFC contract.
The winner
The winner: Dan Hooker def. Mateusz Gamrot at UFC 305
Dan Hooker overcame the grappling threats of Mateusz Gamrot to pick up a hard-fought win at UFC 305.
The lightweight bout was part of the UFC 305 main card at RAC Arena in Perth, Australia, and saw Hooker (24-12 MMA, 14-8 UFC) and Gamrot (24-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) present the best of their games. After 15 minutes, the judges were split, issuing duelling 29-28 scores. Two of the scorecards favored Hooker’s work in the striking department.
The classic grappler vs. striker matchup played out exactly as one would think, as both fighters played to their strengths. But Gamrot surprised Hooker early with a fast combination of punches upstairs. A few moments later, Gamrot brought the fight to his world.
Hooker weathered a storm of ground and pound strikes before returning to his feet and cracking Gamrot with punches, bringing the crowd to life. Hooker hunted for a finish, but Gamrot remained poised to see the end of a very wild opening round.
Gamrot didn’t waste time getting the fight to the ground in Round 2, quickly implementing his smothering ground game. Midway through the round, though, Hooker returned to his feet and got back on the hunt with strikes. It didn’t take long for Gamrot to get back in on the hips, but he had to deal with hard elbows and guillotine threats as Hooker sprawled.
“I love this sh*t!” Hooker said while laughing in the corner between rounds.
With five minutes to go and the fight seemingly up for grabs, Hooker denied an early takedown and led the striking battle. Between takedown attempts, Gamrot managed to land a few strikes, but was mostly outstruck in the final exchanges.
