Ian Machado Garry doesn’t feel like he lost at UFC 310, but still didn’t want to let his coach down.

This past Saturday, Garry squared off with Shavkat Rakhmonov in the five-round co-main event of UFC 310. It was a back-and-forth battle between the two undefeated fighters but in the end, Rakhmonov took home a hard-fought unanimous decision victory, handing Garry the first loss of his MMA career. Afterward, Garry said that despite the result, he didn’t feel like he lost, and while he still believes that to be true, “The Future” still felt compelled to offer an apology to his coach and friend, Charles Oliveira.

“I can sit here happy and proud of everything that I did in that octagon,” Garry said on his YouTube channel. “Could it have been better? Of course, I could have got my hand raised. But I do not feel like I lost that fight.”

Garry then stood up and went to Oliveira, apologizing in Portuguese and hugging the former lightweight champion.

“Sorry, professor. Sorry, professor.”

For his part, “Do Bronx” did not seem to upset by Garry’s performance, and why would he be? Despite his undefeated record, Garry was a sizable underdog heading into the fight and nearly pulled off the upset, taking Rakhmonov’s back in the final round. Though he was unable to secure a fight-ending choke, watching the action back, Garry was clearly thrilled with the fight.

“These last two rounds, I feel like I beat him everywhere,” Garry said. “I feel like I out-grappled him! What a f*cking fight. This is fun! ...

“History. We just made history, the two of us. We put everything on the line, 33-0 combined, you know what I mean?”

And for Garry, the journey is still far from over. Only 27 years old, Garry believes that Saturday proved just how close he is to the top,.

“That fight proves that I am up there with the very best in the world, and I’m not anywhere near where I know I can be,” Garry said. “It’s time to keep growing, keep evolving. I believe it will make me more dangerous.”
