Rakhmonov vs. Garry took place Dec. 7 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. Shavkat Rakhmonov (19-0) and Ian Garry (15-1) squared off in the co-main event clash. The fight aired live on pay-per-view on ESPN+.

Round 1

Referee Marc Goddard oversees the co-main event. Five rounds for this one, buckle up, folks.

Tentative start here, understandably. Garry blocks a jab, then has to deal with Rakhmonov’s first takedown attempt. They’re wrestling forcefully against the cage. Rakhmonov fighting for underhooks, Garry defending well so far. Rakhmonov tries to lift Garry, then go for a trip, no go.

Off the fence, Rakhmonov goes for another trip and Garry again blocks it. Incredible balance from Garry there. Rakhmonov stays on him, he’s holding on to that body lock, Garry has to break the grip.

Garry on a body lock now, but Rakhmonov quickly regains an underhook and they’re back against the fence. Grueling grappling match so far, gas tanks definitely being tested here with plenty of fight left to go.

Back in the center of the cage, Rakhmonov lands a heavy right. Best punch so far and that should win him the round, easily.

Round 2

More careful range striking to start this one, Garry utilizing his jab well. Nice straight right from Rakhmonov. Neither guy wanting to commit here.

Low kick from Garry connects with Rakhmonov’s shin. Lunging left from Rakhmonov glances Garry’s chin. They tie up against the fence. Garry sneaks in a high knee before Rakhmonov forces him back to the fence.

Rakhmonov wants to rip Garry off the fence, but Garry’s takedown defense holds up. He’s fighting Rakhmonov’s body lock.

They separate and Garry tries a spinning backfist, but it doesn’t connect. There’s that left from Rakhmonov again. Really not a lot to score there.

Round 3

Nice high kick by Garry, but Rakhmonov got a hand up. There’s a body kick for Garry. Rakhmonov with little offense through the first 90 seconds here. Garry catches him with a punch coming in. Jab to the body by Rakhmonov.

Garry to the body lock, Rakhmonov right there with him as they get back to a clinch battle on the fence. Tough scenes here as both fighters are putting in the effort, but neither can do much of significance. Goddard calls for them to work. Shortly after, there’s a reset. A little over a minute to go.

That high kick for Garry is close again, but no cigar. Still, Rakhmonov has done almost nothing in this round in the standup. That low kick from Garry is giving Rakhmonov some problems. Spin kick by Rakhmonov whiffs. He sneaks in a good right before the round ends.

Round 4

In between rounds, Garry got a new pair of shorts after a tear opened up in the rear of the previous ones (he was wearing underwear, chill). That’s a first.

Garry keeping Rakhmonov at range now, he might have figured something out. His jab and low kick are scoring. There’s a Garry jab right on the chin. Rakhmonov goes for a takedown and they’re back to the fence. This hasn’t been the mismatch in grappling that some predicted.

Just as I type that, Rakhmonov deep on a takedown with incredible speed and finally he has Garry on his back. Over half a round to go.

Garry going for a body triangle from bottom, he’s focusing strictly on preventing Rakhmonov from advancing, but giving himself few offensive options. Hammerfists by Rakhmonov. Scramble by Garry, Rakhmonov goes to take his back, Garry shakes him off. Fun!

Rakhmonov right to the body lock, he has an angle from behind. Garry putting his weight against the fence to avoid a takedown. They’re back in striking range with under a minute to go.

Well-timed takedown by Rakhmonov puts Garry down again. There’s a brief guillotine attempt by Garry, but Rakhmonov slips that easily. Garry wants to strike from bottom, but Rakhmonov calmly lands a few strikes. Garry not just lying down though, he’s taking chances.

Round 5

Counter from Rakhmonov opens the round. He ventures out with a roundhouse kick, but there isn’t much behind it. Rakhmonov shoots for a takedown, he’s hanging onto that leg and Garry beautifully counters into back control. That was a wild exchange.

The hooks are not in and Rakhmonov is calmly defending. Garry shifts to a body triangle and locks that in. Rakhmonov fighting the hands. Garry aggressive, he attacks with a rear-naked choke. Rakhmonov keeping that chin tucked tight. If that arm gets under, this is over. Rakhmonov not giving in.

There’s a scramble and Rakhmonov is on top. He’s not doing much, but he’s cruising in top position. Impressive recovery after Garry had him in serious trouble.

Less than a minute to go, they’re back on the feet and back to the fence. Backfist from Garry closes it out. Not a crowd-pleaser the whole time, but a solid fight from two of the best in the division.
