UFC 309 post-event facts: Jon Jones enhances GOAT resume with more records

The UFC’s penultimate pay-per-view of 2024 went down Saturday with UFC 309 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The main event saw heavyweight champion Jon Jones (28-1 MMA, 22-1 UFC) return from a 20-month layoff to take on Stipe Miocic (20-5 MMA, 14-5 UFC), and “Bones” blew through it with relative ease en route to a third-round TKO that further etched his name in the all-time octagon record books.

Event stats

The UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance payout for the event totaled $262,500.

Jones, Oban Elliott, Ramiz Brahimaj, Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler earned $50,000 UFC 309 fight-night bonuses.

Debuting fighters went 0-1 on the card.

UFC 309 drew an announced attendance of 20,200 for a live gate of $16,673,954.

Betting favorites went 9-3 on the card.

Betting favorites improved to 29-10 in UFC headliners this year.

Total fight time for the 12-bout card was 2:35:48.

Jon Jones def. Stipe Miocic

Jones became the fourth fighter in UFC history to earn title defenses in two weight classes. Henry Cejudo, Amanda Nunes and Daniel Cormier also accomplished the feat.

Jones’ 16 victories in UFC championship fights are most in company history.

Oliveira’s 23 UFC victories are tied with Andrei Arlovski and Donald Cerrone for second-most in company history behind Jim Miller (27).

Oliveira has been awarded 20 fight-night bonuses for UFC bouts, the most in company history.

Chandler (23-9 MMA, 2-4 UFC) has been awarded a fight-night bonus in five of his six UFC appearances.

Bo Nickal def. Paul Craig

Bo Nickal (7-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) earned the first decision victory of his career.

Nickal’s four-fight UFC winning streak at middleweight is tied for the fourth-longest active streak in the division behind Dricus Du Plessis (eight), Caio Borralho (seven) and Anthony Hernandez (six).

Paul Craig (17-9-1 MMA, 9-9 fell to 1-3 since he dropped to the middleweight division in July 2023.

Craig suffered the first decision loss of his career.

Mauricio Ruffy def. James Llontop

Mauricio Ruffy (11-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) earned the first decision victory of his career.

James Llontop (14-5 MMA, 0-3 UFC) has suffered three of his five career losses by decision.

Marcus McGhee def. Jonathan Martinez

Marcus McGhee (10-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) earned the first decision victory of his career.

Jonathan Martinez (19-6 MMA, 10-5 UFC) has suffered four of his five UFC losses by decision.

Jim Miller def. Damon Jackson

Jim Miller’s (38-18 MMA, 27-17 UFC) 27 victories in UFC competition are most in company history.

Miller’s 19 stoppage victories in UFC competition are second-most in company history behind Oliveira (20).

Miller’s 17 stoppage victories in UFC lightweight competition are most in divisional history.

Brahimaj (11-5 MMA, 3-3 UFC) has alternated wins and losses over his past 11 fights dating back to May 2018.

Brahimaj has earned all 11 of his career victories by stoppage.

Brahimaj earned the first knockout victory of his career.

Mickey Gall’s (7-7 MMA, 6-7 UFC) four-fight losing skid is the longest of his career. He hasn’t earned a victory since July 2021.

Gall has suffered all three of his career stoppage losses by knockout.

Oban Elliott def. Bassil Hafez

Bassil Hafez (9-5-1 MMA, 1-2 UFC) suffered the first stoppage loss of his career with a knockout defeat.

Eduarda Moura def. Veronica Hardy

Veronica Hardy (9-5-1 MMA, 4-5 UFC) fell to 4-3 since she dropped to the UFC women’s flyweight division in May 2018.
