Bill Algeo is hanging up the gloves.
On Tuesday, Algeo (18-9 MMA, 5-5 UFC) announced his retirement from competition on Instagram, during which he thanked the UFC and his supporters, both close and distant, throughout his 13-year professional career.
“Decided to hang em up for realz this time,” Algeo wrote. “This game has been good to me and helped me develop and become a better person. It’s going to be strange not having a fight coming up(unless Fauci decides to man up), but I’ll be guiding the next generation over at @algeomma. I’ve met plenty of cool ppl along the way chasing their dreams and shared the cage with some rivals, friends and heroes of mine.”
“Thank you to the @ufc and the @ufc staff for taking care of me and for having the balls to bring sports back safely in the pandemic. My gym was labeled non-essential for 3-4 months and the ufc helped provide income during that weird time. #forevergrateful
“Thank you to my ppls who have been with me since the beginning and buying tickets to random casinos to help me live my dream. Thank you to @santtiiii for helping me through the ups and downs of this game cause there’s been plenty.”
Algeo, 35, exits the UFC on a two-fight skid, having most recently competed July 20 in a losing effort vs. Doo Ho Choi.
His manager, Oren Hodak of KO Reps, told MMA Junkie on Tuesday that Algeo had been offered another UFC bout for this spring but elected to decline and notify the promotion of his retirement instead.
Prior to his UFC signing in 2020, Algeo held both CFFC and Ring of Combat gold. Once onboarded into the promotion during the COVID-19 pandemic, Algeo split his 10 UFC appearances with wins against Spike Carlyle, Joanderson Brito, Herbert Burns, TJ Brown, and Alexander Hernandez.
Algeo earned three performances bonuses, including Fight of the Night honors in his UFC debut vs. Ricardo Lamas.
