UFC Vegas 97 live blog: Gilbert Burns vs. Sean Brady

This is the UFC Vegas 97 live blog for Gilbert Burns vs. Sean Brady, the welterweight main event this Saturday in Las Vegas.

Burns, a former Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion, joined the UFC back in 2014 and spent the first part of his career as a good-but-not-great lightweight. Then “Durinho” made the jump back up to 170 pounds in 2019 and immediately put together the best run of his career, rattling off four wins to get a title shot against then-champion Kamaru Usman. Though Burns fell short, he’s been a mainstay of the welterweight top-10 since then. Recently though, the 38-year-old has lost back-to-back fights, raising the question of just how much Burns has left in the tank.

An undefeated prospect when he joined the UFC in 2019, Brady had high expectations as one of the best up-and-coming welterweights in the world. He lived up to them at the start, winning his first five fights in the the promotion. A loss to future champion Belal Muhammad halted Brady’s momentum though and he only began to rebuild with a submission win over Kelvin Gastelum this past December. Now Brady has a chance to prove he’s still in the title conversation at 170 pounds with a win over a former title challenger on Saturday.
