AS I SEE IT

Pro Wrestling: Between the Sheets

It was 10 years ago this Thursday. It seems like yesterday,
and at the same time, it seems like 10 lifetimes ago.

My mom, Joan Magee, died on December 5, 2014, at Samaritan
Hospice in Mt. Holly, NJ. She was 82 years old. She died
after a recurrence of breast cancer she'd beaten in 2007.

She went to the ER of Virtua Hospital back on October 10 of
that year, telling us of shortness of breath while sleeping.
That visit involved a cardiac window being put in to drain
the fluid surrounding her heart that had caused the
shortness of breath, which saved her life. She came back
from that as chipper as an 82-year-old woman can, even
complimenting me on my clams and pasta I made for her and my
brother one of the first nights after she came home on
October 21...saying it was better than hers.

But she got sick again that Black Friday, and we took her to
Virtua Hospital. She was told a week later that she had a
recurrence of her breast cancer, and that nothing could be
done. At that point, she told my brother when we arrived
that day at the hospital that she had enough...and was
willing to just be made comfortable.

She was taken to Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Holly, but after
being given morphine and an anti-anxiety drug (which she
asked the comfort care doctor for before transport), she
pretty much went to sleep; although she seemed to know where
she was during the ambulance ride to Samaritan Hospice, and
didn't much care for the bumpy ride, grabbing my hand pretty
firmly at one point, as I sat with her.

My younger brother and I went home after she was checked in
there; but less than 90 minutes later, her condition
suddenly worsened to where we were called to rush back to
the hospice. We stayed overnight... and she passed away at
about 5:55 am; always, always, the Mom to the end...trying
to be sure we got some sleep.

It bookended things, because back when she went to the
emergency room the first time...after being stabilized; she
was actually asking us if we'd eaten...again, Mom first.

She was a great Mom, always worrying about her two grown
sons; teaching us to believe, to not give up, to be patient,
to do the right thing and care about others.

Anyone who'd like to do so in her memory, please send a
donation to the American Cancer Society, or volunteer for a
charity of your choice.

In a lot of ways, my doing this yearly "Indies Helping For
The Holidays" series of blogs is my way of remembering her,
and her teaching my brother and I to help others; that...and
the fact she absolutely LOVED, loved, loved the Holidays,
and loved when I helped with Kathy Fitzpatrick's work with
CZW and Toys for Tots.

During the Holidays, AS I SEE IT has discussed weekly how
the independent wrestling community makes that change by
reaching out to those in need, as independent promotions and
wrestlers hold a wide variety of charity events....

In those events, they've been asking fans to do one small
thing. Just "one small thing"....that meant the world to
someone you will never meet: one can of soup that meant
someone was fed for a meal....one box of rice that meant a
family was fed for a week or more.... one warm coat that
meant an older person won't shiver uncontrollably when they
walk to the market or a doctor's appointment... one toy that
meant that a child is allowed a moment of innocence and joy,
often the same child who has gone through fear and
deprivation for far too long. One "small thing" that is
anything but small.

So....these promotions throughout the United States and
Canada held events and gave back to their community;
collecting canned and non-perishable food and warm clothing,
doing fundraisers for homeless or domestic violence
shelters, animal welfare groups, and those with medical
needs...and lots of Toys for Tots drives. They did it
through (obviously) wrestling shows, plus Comic-Cons,
bowling parties, online trivia contests, chicken BBQ's,
portrait sittings, Twitch streams, and a dozen other means.

These indies are deep into the 2024 season of giving... with
160 charity shows/events/efforts announced (or having
taken place) so far to help their communities for the
Holidays, collecting donations from fans like you. More will
do so over the remaining month of the Holiday season.

From that list, independent wrestling promotions have raised
so far in 2024 353,615.70 in cash donations,
15,777 pounds (that's over 7 1/2 TONS) of canned
and non-perishable food, 1,654 toys; at least 50
winter jackets, 250 backpacks and "tons of school supplies",
24 blankets, three pairs of gloves, and 4 knit hats, over
200assorted "personal care items"; as well as animal
blankets, cat litter, indoor dry/wet food, cat/dog toys, and
unscented baby wipes for animal rescue groups.

Mind you, this is the information I've been able to get from
promotions, charities, and so on. Inexplicably, there are
promotions that don't provide ways to be contacted, don't
have functional social media, or who don't know how much has
been donated or contributed (or even in one case won't
disclose). Every year there are a handful of shows that
have to be removed from this list (we've had 4 already this
year that aren't now counted) because of the inability or
unwillingness to provide information.

News flash: getting publicity for doing good work isn't
bragging or doing something inappropriate. Yes, helping
others for the sake of helping others is its own reward. But
reporting the good you do is a vital part of what you
do...it's called PROMOTING. It's also inspiring others by
your example.

Here's the list so far.
