Brandon Royval is out of his main event fight against Manel Kape at UFC Vegas 103 on March 1 in Las Vegas.

The one-time UFC title challenger announced the bad news on Instagram on Wednesday.

“Unfortunately I’m going to have to pull out of my fight,” Royval wrote. “I’m sorry to Manel Kape and my fans. I’m facing an injury that has me questioning when I’ll be able to train again. This is absolutely a fight I think needs to happen for the flyweight division but as of right now competing [next] month has been ill advised.

“Love y’all and I apologize from the bottom of my heart. I’ll have more details on my YouTube this week.”

Royval didn’t disclose the nature of the injury he suffered or how long he could potentially be sidelined.

It’s unfortunate timing for Royval as he sought to get back into title contention with a win over Kape, which came after a barnburner fight where he handed highly touted prospect Tatsuro Taira his first loss this past October.

Prior to Royval revealing he was out of the fight, Kape actually posted a message on Twitter hinting at his concerns that the main event could be in jeopardy.

“Four weeks for the fight worth the place for the belt, the chills, nausea and panic are already starting to take effect on the body of the little puppy Brandon Royval,” Kape wrote. “I won’t be surprised if he runs away from this fight.”

Sadly, Kape’s concerns were realized with Royval dropping out of the fight scheduled on March 1.

The UFC hasn’t officially addressed Royval’s injuries or if the promotion plans to seek a replacement to face Kape in a new main event.

UFC Vegas 103 takes place at UFC APEX in Las Vegas.
