Round 1

Final fight of the year kicks off with both men in southpaw and Buckley takes the center early. Tests the waters almost immediately with a kick and he really crowds Covington back.

A “Let’s go Col-by” chant breaks out in the first minute. I guess this is Covington country.

Not a lot of action early. Both men feinting, moving, not committing. Buckley landing a few 1-2s when Covington steps in. Covington now the one advancing and Colby shoots his first takedown but Buckley stuffs it nicely and lands a shot on the break. And Covington is cut by the right eye.

Not sure what did it but he’s bleeding right by the eye and it’s already drawing a reaction from Covington. He’s touching and Buckley throws a high kick at it but Covington blocks. Buckley opening up with combos now and there’s a “Col-by sucks!” chant now. Mixed crowd.

Covington looking very rough on the feet. Wild and biting on feints. Buckley yet to really tag him, but he’s landing some solid shots. Ripped the body right there. And the good thing for Buckley is he’s not trying to swing out of his shoes.

Covington forces his way into a clinch and bullies Buckley to the fence. But Buckley showing great defense, gets hooks under, sprawls and separates. And tags Covington on the feet when they break. Covington looks up at the clock and Buckley points at it. He’s feeling REAL good right now.

And he drops Covington! Just before the bell, Covington jumps in and Buckley lands a right hook that takes him off his feet. Buckley follows with a good shot but time runs out.

And that probably was more a “Colby was on one foot” than a true knockdown. But he did get hit.

MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Buckley.

Round 2

That cut is bad. It’s a slice right on the right eyelid. That’s only going to get worse.

Covington still uncomfortable on the feet. He’s never been great there but he is totally without rhythm now. He treis to jab his way into a takedown but he’s way too far out and Buckley sprawls, then lands some big shots.

Another collision and Buckley rips the body. He’s done that a couple times and it’s very effective. Buckley chewing Covington up on the feet right now.

Covington the one taking the center and grabs a clinch, forcing Buckley to the fence and attacking the hips. This is his best effort so far. He locks the hands and gets Buckley down! Against the fence but Covington turns him and he moves to side control.

Buckley saying something and tying up. Then scoots his back to the fence and tries to stand. Covington staying tight on him and gets him back to top half-guard.

Covington moves to side control. Buckley against moves to stand and this time he does. Covington landed no strikes that I saw, but that’s nonetheless a win for him. Buckley right back to work though.

And Buckley shoots a double. He doesn’t commit, so maybe just something to mix in. Pace slowing a big in here but Buckley still landing a few shots. He’s not throwing strong though and Covington’s eye is still bothering him.

Another combination for Buckley, with a leg kick. Buckley with a nice jab. Covington lands a good right hand, his best strike of the fight. But Buckley makes him pay with a hook. Then a double jab. He’s snapping that jab in a big way. And with short time, Buckley extends his hands, Gladiator style.

MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Buckley, 20-18 Buckley overall.

Round 3

Buckley’s corner is feeling very good. Covington is told between rounds that he has to protect his eye. That cut is getting worse. So this could be a time bomb.

And Covington shoots immediately to start the third but Buckley defends. Then comes in with shots but misses. But he goes back to the jab and that keeps killing Covington. Covington with a spinning tornado kick that almost lands and gets a smile out of Buckley.

And then Buckley clubs him with a pair of shots. Covington shoots weakly and Buckley bosses him to the floor. Buckley goes down and moves to mount but Covington scrambles so Buckley stands.

Covington is bleeding like a stuck pig and looks like he’s close to out of this. Buckley’s lead hand can’t miss anymore. Covington shoots but Buckley has the defense. He sprawls and moves to side control. Covington scrambles and Buckley rides it out. Then bullies Covington back to the mat and hits some big shots.

Covington gets a leg and Buckley puts on a reverse triangle! Covington is able to slide out of though and moves to top, Buckley in his guard.

There is so much blood in the cage now. This fight might get stopped if we make it to the end of the round. Covington is pouring blood on Buckley. But Covington is working with small shots here and Buckley is doing nothing. The crowd boos.

Covington staying busy, if not effective. Buckley moves to the fence and tries to stand. Covington staying on the hips but Buckley manages to work to his feet. Covington still holding a clinch here and ducks back down. Buckley defends and breaks though. And on the break, Miragliotta steps in for a doctor check. This could be it.

And it is! The doctor immediately calls it saying “he’s going to lose this eyelid.”

Joaquin Buckley wins via TKO.
