Missed Fists: Amateur bout ends in brutal 11-second faceplant knockout

post-img

Welcome to the latest edition of Missed Fists where we shine a light on fights from across the globe that may have been overlooked in these hectic times where it seems like there’s an MMA show every other day.

Just being real, the highlights you’re about to see below will probably trump whatever happens at UFC 312, which is, on paper, one of the weakest pay-per-view lineups in recent memory.

Don’t believe me? Let’s go to the first clip.

(Big thanks as always to @Barrelelapierna for their weekly lists of the best KOs and submissions, and to @Grabaka_Hitman for uploading many of the clips you see here. Give them a follow and chip in on Patreon if you can.)

Gabriel Ruth vs. Chika Okafor

We begin in the amateur ranks at an HRMMA (as near as I can tell, HR stands for “Hard Rock,” as in Brandon “Hardrock” Higdon, the promotion’s matchmaker) show in Shepherdsville, Ky., where-and there’s no nice way to put this-Gabriel Ruth took Chika Okafor’s soul.

Not only did Ruth need just 11 seconds to end this one, he did so with a clubbing right to Okafor’s head that had Okafor belly-flopping (or more accurately, head-clopping?) onto the canvas. That’s as nasty as it gets and, again, I’d love to see the UFC top that one on Saturday.

Jeremy Miazga-Grzybek vs. Simon Plummer

More amateur action means more defense being thrown out the window. At a Fight League Atlantic show in glorious Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada (hey UFC, go back to Moncton!), Jeremy Miazga-Grzybek decided landing a hammer head kick wasn’t enough, he had to drive the point home with a hammerfist as well.

I probably shouldn’t begrudge Miazga-Grzybek getting caught up in the moment, but I will anyway. After he landed that kick, he should have allowed himself half a second to process what was going on. It’s not like his opponent Simon Plummer fell back into guard or something. His arms flew up as he fell and his head banged against the canvas.

Read the room, er, cage, man!

Joao Gustavo vs. Lincoln Furtado

We saw another soul snatched at a Fight Music Show in Parana, Brazil, where Joao Gustavo delivered a flurry of powerful punches to send Lincoln Furtado crashing to the mat.

Look at Furtado’s face. That man saw spirits.

You now, maybe Gustavo can meet up with Ruth someday and they can trade the souls they’ve taken. Like Pokemon.

Kazuki Arita vs. Kai Maeda

There were just so many terrible things happening this past weekend, including Kazuki Arita punching holes in Kai Maeda’s face at Grachan 72 in Osaka, Japan.

With little time left in Round 3, perhaps Maeda felt he could let his guard down even with Arita hovering over him with malicious intent. Whatever he was thinking, it didn’t do him any good as Arita landed punch after punch after punch on Maeda to leave him flat-out in the corner of the cage.

Bilal Hasan vs. Brian Hauser
Vincenzo Iannuzzo vs. Darwin Pena

Over on UFC Fight Pass, we had Cage Fury FC 139 coming to you from Philadelphia.

The main event saw 23-year-old flyweight prospect Bilal Hasan record the first successful defense of his CFFC title and improve his record to 6-0. Oh, and the win came via a pretty sweet body shot, too.

A rib-roaster, if I’ve ever seen one.

Earlier on the card, Vincenzo Iannuzzo melted Darwin Pena in 20 seconds with a right hand that banged off the side of Pena’s head. It might not have been perfect technique, but the timing was spot on as he caught Pena lunging and made him pay the price.

Hojat Khajevand vs. Kennedy Rayomba

Speaking of getting punished for a bad habit, at an Oktagon MMA 66 show in Düsseldorf, Germany, Kennedy Rayomba just kept ducking his head during exchanges against Hojat Khajevand, and that predictability proved to be his downfall.

Khajevand timed a right hand with Rayomba’s head dipping ever so slightly and *bam* Ramboya’s chin was done for. You can see in the slow motion replay that Khajevand waited patiently for Ramboya to leave himself exposed and he didn’t miss his window of opportunity.

Donovin Jeffcoat vs. David Austin Pierce
Braeten Jorgensen vs. Tyson Gil

We began this week with amateurs and we close with amateurs, in this case two standouts from a Front Street Fights event in Boise, Idaho, which you can watch for free on YouTube.

Donovin Jeffcoat landed a gnarly head kick knockout, blasting David Austin Pierce with such impact that his body was too stunned to actually fall down.

Great awareness from the referee who saw and heard how hard that landed and knew to step in. Pierce didn’t know which was was up after eating that shot.

We close with a shout-out to Braeten Jorgensen, who finished his fight with a proper rear-naked choke.

Not the most spectacular finish, so why is it included? Because Jorgensen is the son of one-time WEC bantamweight title challenger and UFC veteran Scott Jorgensen. That’s right, “Young Guns” has himself a young’n who is following in his father’s footsteps.

That’s one proud papa.
