Colby Covington won’t be deterred by his recent UFC results.
Covington (17-5 MMA, 12-5 UFC) dropped his second consecutive fight, a doctor stoppage TKO loss to Joaquin Buckley last month at UFC on ESPN 63. The former interim welterweight champion is 0-3 in undisputed title fights and appears to be out of the picture for the time being.
Covington, however, doesn’t see it that way. He takes inspiration from Daniel Cormier becoming champion late in his career and likes how he matches up with UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad (24-3 MMA, 15-3 UFC).
“We’re going to do the unthinkable. We’re going to shock the world,” Covington said during a recent stream on his Twitch channel (h/t Combat Casuals). “DC (Cormier) was a champion at 41. I’m only 36 years young. No reason I can’t be champion.
“Belal Muhammad, ‘Remember the Racist,’ I can easily beat him. He’s a good matchup. He’s not going to take me down. He’s not going to outwrestle me. F*ck that. I will smack that dude silly. I know no one knows who he is, but they’re going to know when he’s on my highlight reel after I’m done with him.”
During his rise to title contention, Muhammad had been angling for a fight with Covington since 2017, but he never got his opportunity to face him. After he captured the belt with a win over Leon Edwards at UFC 304 in July, Muhammad told MMA Junkie that Covington will “never touch gold.”
